Role in the project
VTT has been participating in development projects related to using fast pyrolysis bio-oils (FPBO) in small and medium size boilers since the 1990’s and has been a pioneer in recognizing the importance of standardization and the characterization methods. VTT has since been developing fast pyrolysis of biomass with industrial partners to demonstration scale with a 50 000 t/a FPBO plant commissioned in Joensuu, Finland. VTT has published FPBO combustion related publications and continued to pursue topics serving standardization of FPBO fuels. VTT will be producing industrially relevant bio-oils for testing in boilers and drop tube furnace and develop FPBO fuel quality further. Homogenous FPBOs will be produced from challenging biomass feeds such as high-ash biomass. VTT will also contribute to the assessment of environmental aspects for the proposed biofuel chains.
